Based in Edmonton

Cedar Bones Studio was born in mid 2022 after I got married. I’ve been wanting to update my brand to β€˜Cedar Bones’ for a good couple years and the name change was the opportunity I needed to revamp my art practice! For 2022, I will still be doing exhibitions under my name (Michaela Yanish, formerly Rafferty) but markets, Etsy, and my socials will be under β€œCedar Bones Studio”. I look forward to this exciting, new venture and I can’t wait to take you all along with me! :)

Drawing & Daydreaming

Michaela was born in South Africa, but emigrated very young and has been raised in Canada by her South African parents. She had very eclectic upbringing, and is inspired by many an item. She has been painting and drawing as long as she can remember, with a particular motivation due to her dislike of colouring books and wanting to create her own images.

She loves bright colours and fantastical landscapes. Medieval history, the northern renaissance, religious iconography, and historical romances are the main inspirations for her work, even if it doesn’t always look like it. Her aim is to make you feel anemoia (nostalgia for a place you’ve never known). When she’s not painting, she’s researching her ancestry and learning about South African history. reading romance novels, tending to her tropical plants, or doing karate.

Michaela is a new member of the Edmonton Art Club and looks forward to making her art practise more of a focus in her busy life.

Professional Affiliations:

South African born and Canadian raised artist, Michaela, caters to the idea of nostalgia and melancholy; she wants her pieces to elicit memories both cherished and feared. Her art is for those wishing to have a tangible representation of an intangible aspect of their life; inspired by the philosophical exploration of the self and the idea of becoming and belonging as a young adult. She particularly enjoys experimenting with colour, layers, and texture while primarily producing vivid and emotional pieces. Her preferred medium is acrylics, but occasionally ventures into digital and fibre mediums. Michaela graduated from MacEwan University in 2019 with a diploma in Fine Arts, with a focus in painting.
